Studying English at 50 and over

One in four of our students is aged 50 or over. Many people hesitate because of their age, but in practice this is one of the most common age groups on the campus.

You do not need any English

EEP takes students from A0 — the complete beginner stage. It is the lowest entry level of any course we run. Most lessons are one-to-one, so you never have to speak in front of others, and if you make a mistake the only other person in the room is your teacher.

There are others your age

55 students are over 50 — 26% of the school. That is the second-largest group after 15–24, and about the same size as 25–39. 26 of them are over 60, and the average age is 59.7. It splits almost evenly: 27 men and 28 women.

After lessons

1,500m above sea level, 18–22°C all year round. The heat does not wear you down, so you can still get out in the afternoon.

Golf

Pinewoods and Camp John Hay apply a WALES student rate for rounds. The indoor practice range at the Palace Hotel, just outside the school gate, includes club hire, and Camp John Hay has a driving range and lessons.

Weekend trips

San Juan beach, Sagada, Vigan and the Banaue rice terraces are all within reach for a weekend. We suggest trips according to your fitness, divided into trekking · town culture · golf.

Climate

18–22°C all year round. Baguio is about the only city in the Philippines where you live without air conditioning.

How daily life works

0 minutes to class

Classrooms · dining hall · lounge · garden are all in the same building as the dormitory. You can get through the whole day without going outside.

Lifts

All 11 floors are reached by lift. You never need to use the stairs.

Hospitals

There are several university hospitals in central Baguio.

Please check before you enrol

These are things it is too late to find out after you arrive. If any of them apply to you, please tell your consultant before you apply.

Diet

We do not adjust meals for individual students. Special meals — low-salt · diabetic and the like — cannot be prepared separately. If a long-term condition means your diet has to be managed, this must be checked before you enrol.

Age

The published range is 15 to 70. Over 70 you can still enrol, on a signed waiver — we walk you through it at the enquiry stage. A 76-year-old is studying here right now.

Rooms

Every floor is reachable by lift. The low-floor (LG) studio, however, is not recommended for this age group. Please ask for a room on an upper floor.

Medication

Bring plenty of any medication you take. We advise bringing an English-language prescription with it.

Couples · friends

The two of you can enrol together. It does not matter if your levels of English differ — lessons are one-to-one, so neither of you has to keep to the other's pace. For room arrangements, please see the dormitory pages.
